Excellence in Science and Service Awards

About the ESA2

Scientific Excellence is Core to the Mission of the Genetic Toxicology Association and the Excellence in Science in Award (ESA) was created to celebrate our members’ contributions to the field. Historically, this was a single award given to a mid/late-stage investigator within the field of genetic toxicology. Service to the GTA and/or mentoring were included as criteria.

In 2021, the GTA ESA became the ESA2 and was divided to recognize both scientific and service contributions individually.

  • The Excellence in Science Award recognizes a mid/late-stage investigator within the field of genetic toxicology
  • The Excellence in Service Award recognizes a nominee's service to the GTA and/or mentoring as criteria

Award Criteria

Nominees should have made significant contributions in one or more of the following areas:

  • Innovation: Promoting and/or developing novel genetox tests or data analysis tools
  • Risk Assessment: Advancing how genetox data are used in the risk assessment process
  • Knowledge Exchange: Fostering the exchange of information concerning scientific advancement of the field

Remembering Robert Daniel "Dan" Benz

The Excellence in Service Award was created to honor the memory of Robert Daniel “Dan” Benz. Dan was a long-time GTA member and shaped the content of the Excellence in Science Award ceremony for many years. He was a memorable Master of Ceremonies, and was likely one of the top reasons you wanted to attend the annual meeting! His ability to make a scientific conference fun is a gift unpossessed by many and will truly be missed.  His other GTA contributions include organizing a SAR/in silico workshop, long before most people could spell SAR. He also organized and presented at other GTA sessions and was the GTA’s first webmaster.
